Application Question

Q 5-11. An insurance agency is located in a two-story masonry building. The building located next door to the agency is a twelve-story masonry apartment building that includes balconies and large bay windows on all sides.

Describe the construction considerations that would influence the spread of fire from the apartment building to the insurance agency's building.

Explanation / Answer

Two integral parts of a fire suppression system are dry chemicals and wet agents that are used to suppress fire. The basic types of alarm system are: Domestic smoke alarm Fire alarm with manual call point Fire alarm with manual call point and fire brigade Fire sprinkler with fire brigade Firm alarm with heat detectors Automatic fire suppression system does not require human intervention to stop fire. It detects fire and starts automatically to stop it. The major components of this system are sensors, electric pump and nozzles Pre-action fire sprinkler are filled with a mixture of air and water to pass through when the smoke alarm is turned off. It requires 2 triggers. Deluge sprinkler can deliver water in large quantity over a specific area. It is used to stop rapidly growing fire. Open nozzles are used in this system. Foam sprinklers use foam to stop fire from spreading. There is foam and water mixture inside it, which is discharged over the fire for stopping the spread. Fire can break anywhere and at any time. Usually it takes some time for the fire brigade to reach to the accident spot. In such cases, a trained employee can use the fire extinguisher and can help in reducing the intensity and spread of fire till the arrival of fire brigade. Effectiveness of external fire protection can be calculated on 3 dimensions: Effective compartmentalization of the fire spot Effective emergency evacuation Slowing the spread of fire The factors that a risk management professional must consider while working with a public fire department: Administrative control measures to make the fire task safe for the worker Engineering control on apparatus design to make the fire tackling task easy Personal Protection control by using fire safe equipment and clothes Exterior exposure can be controlled by keeping the area between buildings clear because fire needs entities to spread. If the area is kept clear, spread of fire can be stopped or slowed. A water spray system can spread in form of sprinkles over the fire and try to reduce its intensity. Water spray system discharges water in a certain specific direction with a specific intensity so as to subside the intensity of fire. Heavy curtains must not be used in the building as they can easily catch and spread fire. Instead tinted glass on windows can be used. The area between the 2 buildings must be clear and garbage must be disposed properly so as to stop spread of fire.
