Question
A study was conducted in the North and South Thames Regional Health Authorities (United Kingdom) to see if lower socioeconomic status ("deprivation") was associated with emergency (as opposed to elective) hospital admissions for cancers of the colorectum, lung, and breast. Each of the 10 areas were ranked according to affluence using census tract data and then analyzed in relation to hospital admission statistics for each area for a four-year period. The results showed that the lower the socioeconomic status of the area, the more likely the hospital admissions for cancers of these sites were to be emergency admissions.
