Question
please discuss the following three questions/issues. You can discuss them in regard to an individual's development or a society's development, or both.
(1) In our society some people gravitate towards choosing a career or a lifestyle that fits traditional gender roles (a typical example is that a woman chooses to be a stay-at-home mom). Some other people sometimes look down upon those choices. Is it fair? Are there any benefits that stem from gender typing according to gender norms in a society?
(2) On the other hand, what are some potential disadvantages of conforming to traditional gender roles?
(3) From your point of view, what is the goal of gender development? Is it creating androgynous individuals? Or some other goal(s)?
Explanation / Answer
1. Today, because of the free society, almost everyone works. The gender equality in the society has brought sea of changes where men and women are almost equally work in different fields. The problem for a women is that they have to go on maternity leave and resume the job whenever necessary and they also have to look after the children when they go. So, managing both becomes very difficult for many women, besides children are not cared well when they are out.
This particular issue has made many women choose their family over profession. They take care of the kids, they cook, wash, clean and look after the everyday chores of the house. This they do it because women are known for their patience, love and soft nature in handling kids. In many countries, there is a statement about people who look after the home, ‘House Wife’, meaning that they don’t work. But, if one is to pay for all the above said daily household jobs to a maid or servant, one has to pay more than the national minimum wage. So, it would be ridiculous to say that they are not working.
2. The world has witnessed enough struggles for women’s education, voting, property etc. They all came to the street to fight for their rights and they got it. Now, how would someone justify that only women should sit at home and look after the kids while the man is away for a job? Why not the women go for job and men look after the kid because women have sacrificed their career to bring the child to the world? So this conforming to social roles will only deny the rights the women won after long struggle.
3. Gender development is only for the goal of reproduction and not for discrimination. So both the gender can play any other role apart from the reproduction role because that’s the only different role they both could perform.
