Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. In 1980, the company partnered with IBM to bundle their operating system. Five years later, IBM asked Microsoft to develop and OS for their machines and Microsoft created OS/2 for IBM. In parallel, Microsoft kept selling their OS independently which eventually became more popular than IBM. Currently Microsoft’s operating system Windows is the most popular OS in the world. Their other notable product includes Microsoft Office, the market leader in productivity software.

The core competency of Microsoft is building consumer centric software that is independent of hardware. This has helped them spread their operating system globally across devices from different manufacturers.
