Explanation / Answer

Perhaps the reason why personality psychology is moving away from its dominant paradigms is because it does not sufficiently explain the complex mechanisms of human personality observed in day to day life. The current understanding of personality is based on trait versus type approach that does not take into account the influence of genetics and the environment. With the recent advancemnts of technology that allows a thorough investigation of the neural and physiological correlates of behavior and personality, the neurobiological perspective is an emerging trend in the study of psychology. At the other end of the spectrum, there is an increasing recognition of the mind-body relationship and its impact on well-being. The adoption of a spiritual perspective addresses many of the existential issues that individuals face today due to an ever-increasing materialist culture and a deep sense of alienation.

In my view, both these trends would have a significant and enduring impact on the study of personality. Psychology is a young discipline that is in the process of establishing a strong theoretical understanding of human behavior. The acceptance and amalgamation of varied perspectives are perhaps one of the core strengths of psychology and would be beneficial to the understanding of personality psychology as well. In the future, I see a scope for developing a sense of self in artificial intelligence machines.
