Question
A school director is asking for your advice for a new teaching evaluation that she wants students to complete for their professors each semester. Please read her email below and then respond to her questions, carefully considering both the content and the format of her measure.
“Hello again,
Below you will find the draft of the measure I am planning on trying out this semester. I would like your advice on the current items and any suggestions for additional items. Which items do you feel will be most helpful and why? And do you feel that I’m leaving any items out that would assist in conducting better evaluations? I also have heard about a different rating system known as BARS: what is it and would this be a good thing to include in our evaluations?”
Please rate the following on a scale of 1-5 (1 being satisfactory and 5 being excellent)
Instructor’s knowledge about the topic
Instructor’s responses to emails
Instructor’s friendliness
Instructor’s use of technology
Quality of room
Quality of assignments
I enjoyed this class
This class was interesting
I would take another class with this instructor
I came to class most days
The instructor’s grades were fair
This instructor should continue to teach at Blackwood College
Explanation / Answer
I really like the items chosen for the teacher's evaluation. These are very helpful; Instructor’s knowledge about the topic, Instructor’s responses to emails, Quality of assignments, I enjoyed this class, I would take another class with this instructor, I came to class most days, the instructor’s grades were fair and this instructor should continue to teach at Blackwood College. However, I feel this additional question should be added: Did this class add to your knowledge? and about Instructor’s friendliness option, I wish to divide it into friendliness inside his/her office and outside (Public space). The reason for this is that I have observed that some of the instructors are very good at social skills and are never rude, impolite or harsh in public with a student but when they are alone in the office with the student, they turn into something else and very harsh on the students no one believes the student as the behaviour o the teacher is so good in the public space.
BARS refer to Behaviourally Anchored Rating Scales. It is used to provide a better method of rating employees. This scale focuses on behaviors that are considered to be important for completing a job task or doing the job properly, rather than looking at more general employee characteristics (e.g. personality, vague work habits).
For example, rather than having a rating item that says: Responses to emails, a BARS approach may break down that task into behaviors: For example:
· Replies within 24 hours.
· Greets in the mail and addresses the concern in the mail.
I think the inclusion of BARS is going to help the cause.
