Question

search for and select a quantitative article that interests you and that has social change implications.

Post a very brief description (1–3 sentences) of the article you found and address the following:

Describe how you think the research in the article is useful (e.g., what population is it helping? What problem is it solving?). Using Y=f(X) +E notation, identify the independent and dependent variables. How might the research models presented be wrong? What types of error might be present in the reported research?

Explanation / Answer

The research article tested using a natural experiment that draws on random artillery strikes by Russian forces in Chechnya to gauge the impact of indiscriminate violence on subsequent insurgent violence.

All existing theories and empirical studies conclude that indiscriminate violence creates insurgent attacks. This research studies the subject and helps to understand the causes of insurgent attacks which in turn can help the society, Government and people to avoid such instances. The study found that indiscriminate violence reduced insurgent attacks.

Dependant variable is attack and independent variables are treatment, distance, population, rebel, base, terrain and deadground.

This natural experiment cannot be taken in a broader claim that use of indiscriminate violence can be counterproductive. There could be a miss of variables and the context and situation should also be considered. The results which produced in this region not necessary provide the same elsewhere. Factors which could have incited insurgent attacks may be less powerful comparatively. This study was just challenging the existing theories and cannot be taken as conclusive.
