In October of 2010, the American Counseling Association Governing Council approved a new definition of counseling. This new definition is ''Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness education and career goals. In a statement of no more than 500 words, describe how this definition of counseling reflects your personal and professional values, beliefs, experiences, skills and interests. The new definition ''Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness education and career goals." This definition encompasses and inspirer each professional counselor to be a professional of a higest standard by keeping the client and helper relationship in a space that builds on trust, respect, and confidentiality. The counselor as a helper should not be judgemental or label his or her client as they come from diverse backgrounds, race, culture, families. The client should be able to trust the professional to help them achieve their highest potential whether it pertains to their education, career or social skill despite their current mental health condiiton. In this way, this definition reflects my personal and professional values and beliefs.
