A.) Some people argue that understanding people no longer matters, that the rules for good behavior are old-fashioned and out of date. However, good behavior and manners are never out of style. Etiquette, like all other cultural behaviors, evolves to match the times. Without etiquette, members of society would show far too much impatience and disrespect for one another, which would lead to insults, dishonesty, cheating, road rage, fist fights, and a rash of other unfortunate incidents. Understanding people in society, helps us show respect and consideration to others and makes others glad that we are with them. Without proper manners and understanding, the customs of polite society would soon disappear and we would act more like animals and less like people. Aggressiveness and an "every man for himself" attitude would take the lead. You also will find that understanding becomes second nature to you rather than a set of rules, and your own life will be more pleasant. People respond positively to those who are nice to them and who treat them with respect. Proper understanding guides you in how to do this without "missing something" because you simply were not aware that something you did or did not do might be offensive to the other person.
B.) Why understanding other people important in our society? It is important to understand others in our society for many different reasons. The first reason is communication. Talking to others to see how they feel about situations. Knowing their views on different things. People communicate in many different ways such as oral, body languages facial expressions and things written down. Another way to understand other people is by putting yourself in their shoes to see the world through their eyes. That is important because it helps us connect with them on a deeper level. It would help others get along. How do people use nonverbal cues to understand others? Nonverbal communication is used to express emotion, convey attitudes, and communicate personality traits. According to the book social psychology, nonverbal cues serve a variety of functions in communication. People use nonverbal cues to understand others by facial expressions, touch and gestures. People can look at a person to see how they are feeling. They can tell if a person is sad, happy, stress or angry. By a person using hand gestures could also express emotion
Explanation / Answer
1. Man is a social being. A man cannot survive in isolation. Communication for support, love, security, and protection act as one of his basic needs to live. Communication must be a reciprocal relationship. For proper communication to occur, man must reply appropriately to the context and in relation to what the other person is saying. For this particular reason, it is vital that man must understand other people in our society. One of the primary goals of man from an evolutionary perspective is reproduction. But how is man able to do that if he does not understand the views of other? How is he to function in a society, as part of community, as an integral support system of a culture; if he does not have the basic skills of understanding.
This understanding does not only arise from verbal communication. Communication consists of only 7% verbal communication but 93% of non-verbal communication. Knowingly and sometimes unknowingly, we send out signals through our non-verbal cues. This includes things like the way we stand or sit, our eye-contact, the pitch of our voice, and the proximity of which we stand. For example. if we are at a party and we are not particulary interested in socialising, we tend to sit in a position where are our arms and legs are crossed. A person who sees this, feels that he is not welcomed for communication and looks elsewhere. Similarly, if we are more understanding and more comfortable with a person, we tend to stand closer to them compared to those who are not. Through these subtle cues, nonverbal communication helps us to understand each other better.
2A. This view has raised a lot of good points with which we can agree. In a dog eat dog world, where everyone is too busy with their own lives, it is good to remember the importance of being respectful and understanding to one another to make the world a better place. The effort put in would be quite little, but the reward is plenty. It is not hard to say a please or a thank you when a favour or act is being done, but the satisfaction and pleasantness that arises makes it worth it.
2B. This view focuses more on nonverbal communication, and as mentioned earlier, we can understand a lot about others based on their nonverbal cues. It is important for us to assess these cues and react appropriately so that the relationship is good.
