What are the messages?
The underlying message is that there is lots of confusion in the society and the governments about how to deliver sex education and deliver it effectively. People without proper knowledge end up in lots of confusion about their physical changes and unwanted pregnancy. The problem with sex education in the schools are different from one school to another school which results in lots of confusion. Some even think that sex education should be given by parents but whatever it is, sex education is good for the adolescents who are trying to get intimate. If they are properly oriented, the society will be healthy. The programme will also help students understand the socio, economic and financial difficulties they will come across and sexually transmitted diseases.
How were your own experiences with sex education similar to or different?
I never received any formal sex education but my friends helped me understand things in a practical way. I also learn it online.
What do you remember learning? (It's okay if you were raised in another country - you should still reflect on the messages you received.)
I learnt that sex is allowed only after marriage and I was not ready to have sex. But my friends told masturbating is ok. I also learnt that if I hurry I would end up in great trouble.
What do they say are the problems with the messages in formal sex ed programs?
In formal education programmes, the trainers or educators are not ready to teach in a convincing way and the government hasn’t got any hold on the programmes. Different schools have different type of delivery, so students are confused.
Do you think these messages have anything to do with teen pregnancy?
Yes, they are somehow related to teen pregnancy as well because sex education includes the aftermath of having sex. If the sex education programme is effective enough, it would at least prevent teen pregnancy but people are emotional and youngsters, especially are quick in deciding without thinking about the aftermath. A society such as America is an individualistic society where people do whatever they want.
And finally, in your view, what needs to change with regard to sex education? Why?
