Question
Your strength and conditioning coach injured his arm helping the baseball team with some workouts. His physician has indicated that he cannot work on Wednesday and Friday afternoons for the next month because he will need to attend physical therapy for his injury. The physician has provided a copy of the coach’s medical records and a schedule for physical therapy to you. The strength coach currently conducts weight training with baseball Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2-4 pm. There are only three strength and conditioning coaches for the 18 sport athletic program.
a. What type of accommodation is being requested? [1 points]
b. Do you grant the requested accommodation? [1 points]
c. Why or Why not? [5 points]
Explanation / Answer
a. The type of accommodation requested here is accommodation using modifying working schedules. The coach needs to attend physical therapy for his injury on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and our schedule for weight training with the coach is also there on the same days from 2-4. Hence the coach needs a change in work schedule on these days to manage both his treatment and coaching.
b. Yes, I will grant the admission and change the work schedule accordingly.
c. Employer needs to provide reasonable accommodation to the qualified employee with disability to ensure equal access to employment opportunities under ADA until it causes undue hardship for the business. The coach has presented the medical records and the physical therapy schedule which proves that his request has met the conditions in Rehabilitation Act and is qualified for the accommodation. The accommodation will not cause any cost to the company. As we have only three strength and conditioning coaches for the 18 sport athletic program, the accommodation may create some difficulties but the same can be overcome by arranging the work schedule accordingly by changing the work days or work hours with other coaches. Hence the accommodation will not cause undue hardship and the request can be granted.
