Question

PART TWO: TWO DINNERS Describe the eating patterns or rituals of an everyday meal with your family (not a special occasion.) Imagine your family from the point of view of a complete outsider and explain what typically happens. You should use the list of "unwritten rules" provided in the lecture notes This will hopefully give ideas about some of the do's and don't's of eating behaviour. Note that the list provided is meant as a prompt to help you get started, so don't feel you need to write about every item as they won't fit all situations Then, as a contrast, describe another dinner time that you have experienced either your family in the past when you were younger if the eating pattern has changed over time as has happened in many families OR . a dinner you were invited to in the home of another family who did at least some things differently in their routine

Explanation / Answer

Family that eats and prays together stays together. The concept is still valid in most of the families but the way it happens is different. As time has changed as most of the parents have started working and the children especially youngsters have more freedom, the dinner rules have also changed.

When our family sits at the dinner table, only my parents sit on the dinner table following the usual rules. My mother arranges everything and invites everyone for meal. My father sits on the table but I and my brother take food and sit in front of the TV watching something and occasionally answer. My parents follow all the unwritten rules of the dining table. We don’t have any meaningful conversation and when my parents ask any question, we just give one word replies without eye-contact.

Yester year dinners were very formal that included the initial prayer after everyone had gathered around the table. People were expected to use cutleries appropriately. One shouldn’t talk with food in the mouth and shouldn’t make noise while chewing. Spilling food wasn’t allowed. People were expected to use napkins while eating.
