Question

This short assignment is related to your Chapter 2 (Salkind) material.

Instructions: FIRST, count the number of letters in each word (for example, “Word” has 4 letters). SECOND, I want you to count the number of syllables in each word. A syllable is a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole (or part of the whole) word. For example, there are two syllables in water (wa and ter) and three syllables in inferno (in and fer and no). I’ll do the first few for you, but you do the rest! NOTE: I suggest doing your counts a couple of times. If you get even one number wrong (that is, you say there are 8 letters in “Tenuous” when there are really 7), it will screw up the mean. Yet it won’t screw up the median and mode, at least not as badly. You should know why that’s the case after reading Chapter 2!

TOTALS:         Total number of letters: __441________    Total number of syllables: _141__

Calculate the Mean, Median, and Mode separately for the number of letters and the number of syllables

1). Letters

a: Total number of letters =441

b. Mean = 6.49

c. Mode = 6

d. Median = 6

2). Syllables

a: Total number of syllables =142

b. Mean = 2.08

c. Mode = 2

d. Median = 2

3) How well does each measure (mean, median, and mode) describe each data set (the data

set for letters and the data set for syllables)?

4) Do they give you a good sense of what the data looks like? Why or why not?

5) What do you notice in the terms of pattern of relationship between length and number of

syllables in randomly selected English words compared to the number of letters in those

    words?

Explanation / Answer

3. The mean, median and mode for both the data sets give a fair indication of the key characteristics of both the data sets. Since the values of the mean, median and mode are more or less the same, we can assume that the data sets are normally distributed.

4. I would not say that these measures give a good sense of what the data looks like because all of them are measures of central tendency, and since their values are similar, we can substitute them for one another. In order to get a bette picture of the data, we require additional descriptive statistics such as standard deviation.

5. From the given information, one can assume that a syllable is comprised of three letters, on an average.
