Creativity and Innovation This is an individual activity. View the A Peacock in the Land of Penguins slide show, and answer the following questions: 1. Why is this situation common in most companies? 2. What are the obstacles to creativity? 3. Based on the slide show, identify ways in which creativity and innovation can be improved? This assignment is worth 10% of the final grade.

Explanation / Answer

1. Most companies welcome innovation and creativity to a certain extent. As long as it does not challenge the stability of the organisation, and the thoughts are not too radical and can still be fit in the "borders" of the organisation, they are welcomed. It is the uncertainity that novely brings which seems to challenge the equillibrium of the company which makes the higher officials wary to accept these new thoughts.

2. The obstacles to creativity are many. The need to conform to everyone else is probably the greatest of them all. It can be seen that one's thoughts are programmed to follow one channel. Instead of thinking out of the box, a creative person's ability to think are limited. Another obstacle is the inability to express themselves and the uncertainity of the
creative thinkers acceptance.

3. Creativity and innovation can be improved through acceptance. The company should provide a channel where ideas can be freely expressed in terms of a suggestion box or meetings twice a week where out of the box ideas are explored.
