Josh is 14, he comes from a poor family; his mother is divorced but very supportive and values education. Outside of school he excels at all his endeavors, which include basketball, working on the family car, and likes to read and has even written a few short stories, but has never shown them to anyone. He hopes to become a basketball player when he grows up.

What can you say about Josh’s self-concept and self-esteem?

Explanation / Answer

The way in which we think about our self and the way in which we see ourselves as a person is termed Self-concept. While self-esteem is the confidence a person has in his own worth or abilities and the self-respect he has. Josh has low self-esteem as he is having very little confidence in himself and his capabilities. For example; he has even written a few short stories, but has never shown them to anyone. His self-concept is that he considers himself as a future basketball player as he considers himself fit for this profession.
