Erikson’s view of development during young adulthood may not be as pertinent today as it was when it was formulated. Seeking a romantic partner has ceased to become a dominant goal for many young adults, who are instead choosing to focus to establish a rewarding career that allows them to perform meaningful work. In addition, individuals who may not be able to find romantic partners for marriage in the traditional sense such as those with a non-heterosexual orientation are excluded from overcoming a sense of isolation throughout their development, according to this view. Although finding a romantic partner is definitely a priority for many young adults, I feel that today’s generation is moving their focus towards fulfilling their potential. Perhaps this drive maybe can be included in Erikson’s theory instead of the need to seek intimacy with others.
