The brain’s lower-level structures are those structures that are the oldest parts of the brain, having existed for much of its evolutionary history. It consists of the brain stem, the spinal cord, and the cerebellum.
If Brain stem is damaged: The brain stem is the bridge between your brain and your body, and it is also responsible for functions like breathing or maintaining arousal and motor control. It houses connections between your body and other brain regions that are responsible for sensation and perception. If damage is severe, it can cause death or coma, or put someone into a vegetative state.
When the spinal cord is damaged: If the spinal cord is damaged, the highway becomes essentially closed. Nerve impulses can't get through. This results in paralysis and loss of mobility and sensation.
When cerebellum is damaged: It can lead to loss of coordination of motor movement, the inability to judge distance and when to stop, and the inability to perform rapid alternating movements. Cerebellum is the most important lower level structure of the brain.
