Question

You are right on track with your comment "we tend to form judgments prior to meeting someone or prior to fully getting to know them...". There is much research related to how long it takes a person to form an initial impression of someone they meet. This is mainly based on physical appearance with a large focus on the face and facial expressions. However, we also rely on our experiences and sometimes stereotypes. What about social norms physical cues? How might these factors work together to help us organize information and also use mental shortcuts to categorize people we meet?

Explanation / Answer

The informal understandings i.e. the social norms and the physical cues i.e. the body language are the factors that work together to help us organize information about people whom we meet. For example, a person who is not smiling on his first day at the job is considered very rude and impolite. In contrast, people who are smiling are taken positively in life.
