Question
1.) Discuss how the stigma of being an alcoholic, drug addict, or compulsive gambler differs between men and women 2.) Why has the female prison population in the United States nearly doubled in the last 10 years? Are you optimistic or pessimistic about this trend? 3.) Discuss how homophobia affects the treatment of gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual individuals as it pertains to addiction and recovery. 4) What do you feel needs to be done to change the narrative of the shame factor in treatment for all?Explanation / Answer
1. Depending on their gender, social stigma plays a huge influence whether or not an individual is likely to seek treatment for addiction related issues. Alcoholism, drug addiction, or gambling are more acceptable among males than females. Females are commonly expected to assume the role of a nurturing mother and caretaker, which to many maybe incongruous with such activities. While this maybe far from the reality, such beliefs prevent women from seeking treatment for their problems are they may either be in denial of their condition or may experience shame in accepting it openly.
