5. Conversations and relations like that between Julia and her daughter are quite common in America. The American society is much more open about sex and other controversial topics as opposed to other societies, especially those towards the east. Although Julia seemed a little hesitant to give her daughter a comprehensive explanation of what sex is exactly, it is still much more information than is given to children of Asian parents, for example,where there may not be a single occurence of a conversation of this sort between parents and their children. What I understand from this narration is that there is a level of comfort and lack of stigma surrounding topics that are related to sex, which allows parents to talk to their children as young as 8 years about how it happens, including homosexual relationships.
