Cathedrals in the medieval age played an important role in attracting people from distant places because they were considered to be the most holiest places on earth. They were believed to hold the remains of Jesus, Mother Mary and the Saints. They were also called Shrines in those days and even today. One of the most famous cathedral during the medieval age was Saint Thomas a Becket's cathedral in Canterbury and stories told by the pilgrims during one of the pilgrimage to this shrine became the first record of English Literature by Chaucer.
The popular belief was that if people visit these shrines, they will be cured of their diseases and forgiven their sins. So, people made sure that they visit those shrines to get rid of their sins. So.e people also believed that if they touch the relics of the saints, they would be cured. People often travelled in groups to protect themselves from the attack of the thieves and wild animals.
Although, religions doesn't hold much water today in the lives of people, even today people go for such pilgrimages and this practice is prevalent in all the religions. Most of the time people walk in order to experience the pain as a sign of their penance but if it is too long, they travel by vehicle. Rome and Makkah are two places where the believers travel every year to get a glimpse of the core of their religions.
