Life span development focuses on human development and the life span has been viewed from major theoretical perspectives such as the physical development, cognitive development, personality development, social development, and evolutionary perspectives. Each emphasizes somewhat different aspects of development and steers developmentalists in particular directions. Physical development is the development involving the body's physical makeup, including the brain, nervous system, muscles and senses, and the need for food, drink, and sleep. One specialist might look at the malnutrition in children while another may look at how an athlete's performance declined during adulthood. Cognitive development is the development involving the ways that growth and change in intellectual capabilities influence a person's behavior. Cognitive developmentalists examine learning, memory, problem solving, and intelligence. Specialists in cognitive development might want to see how problem solving skills change over the course of life or if cultural differences exist in the way people explain their academic successes and failures, or how traumatic events experienced early in life are remembered later in life. Personality development is the development involving the ways that the enduring characteristics that differentiate one person from another change over the life span. A developmentalist might ask wether there are stable, enduring personality traits throughout the life span. Social development is the development in the way in which individuals' interactions with others and their social relationship grow, change and remain stable over the course of life. A developmentalist might examine the effects of racism or poverty or divorce on development. Evolutionary-theoretical approach to psychology that attempts to explain useful mental and psychological traits such as memory, perception, or language as adaptations. A developmentalist might see evolutionary development as the functional products of natural selection. I see myself relating more to the Social development because throughout our lives, we have so many friends and people come and go from a social standpoint. Not everyone goes through the phases in life at the same time and one may feel left out and feel like they have nothing in common anymore and relate and socialize with someone they can relate too at the same point in their life. I have had that on numerous occasions with life experiences and how from a social stand point many people have come and gone and were not where I was in life.

I strongly agree with this passage. The main scope of lifespan development is that it provides a broad range of ages and topical areas. Its primary aim is to examine the links between human age groups and the areas of physical, cognitive, social and personality development. Life span could be viewed from six major theoretical perspectives which are the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, contextual, and evolutionary perspectives. Each of these theories emphasizes on different aspects of development and steers developmentalists in particular directions.The theoretical perspectives provides a different way of looking at the development. Considering them together paints a fuller portrait of the myriad ways human beings change and grow over the course of their lives.
