Question
Assignment:
In your assignment, you will be discussing one a series of experiments conducted by Albert Bandura in the 1960s, called The Bobo Doll experiments. Bandura was interested in testing whether social behaviors could be acquired through modeling or social influence. They hypothesized that exposure to a role model would impact the levels of aggressiveness displayed by children. (I have dramatically oversimplified this research study, so please feel free to go look it up!)
They selected a group of boys and girls from a nursery school and separated them into groups. (These groups were based on their level of aggressiveness before the study, but don’t worry about that part for this assignment). The children were randomly divided into three groups:
Group 1: No role model
Group 2: Non-aggressive role model
Group 3: Aggressive role model
The children in Group 3 were shown an adult behaving aggressively toward the Bobo doll (the adult hit the Bobo doll with a mallet).
The children in Group 2 were shown an adult who played quietly with the Bobo doll (and did not try to brain it with a mallet).
The children in Group 1 were not exposed to an adult playing with the Bobo doll.
The children were then put in a situation where they could play with the Bobo doll (remember, I'm oversimplifying the study). They found that the children who had witnessed an adult playing aggressively with the Bobo Doll were more aggressive with the Bobo Doll themselves.Â
For your assignment, I want you to identify the following elements of this experiment:
The INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
The DEPENDENT VARIABLE
The TREATMENT
The CONTROL GROUP
The TREATMENT GROUP (remember, there can be more than one)
Please write IN COMPLETE SENTENCES. You do not have to write in paragraph form. If you decide to look up the study and add any information from an outside source, make sure to cite your sources (If you need help, I've attached a citation assistance file in the module!).
Explanation / Answer
The independent variable in the aforementioned study would be the exposure of children to the given aggressive and non aggressive role models, whose behavior was expected to be mimicked by the children later on as a consequence.
Corollary to the above statement, the dependent variable would, of course, be the elicited behavior after viewing the designated role model.
Group 1 would be the control group wherein there was no depiction of a role model. Group 2 and 3 were the treatment group where there was a clear exposure to aggressive and non aggressive role models respectively.
