Question

Jon is a 9 year old, and his mother describes him as always having been very active, very curious and eager to please. She is now getting reports from the school saying that he has been getting into trouble for answering questions before he is called on and for getting out of his seat at the wrong times. He says he doesn’t like school anymore, and doesn’t want to go anymore. His father says this is the wrong attitude and they have been arguing about his lack of effort and how much time he spends playing games rather than on homework. Daniel is a 9 year old who is also described as being active, curious and eager to please He lives in a rural setting, and doesn’t have access to a school. He is expected to get up early, and help with the farm chores, and if there are not too many things to be done, his mother teaches him. His father says it is very good he has such a high energy level as there is so much to do. His mother says she loves his curiosity, because he is easy to teach. He looks forward to the sessions with his mother, as he finds them interesting and a break from the hard work. You learn that Daniel is actually Jon’s great great-grandfather, and lived during a time when disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were not known, and when one’s way of life involved a great deal of time outdoors and there were no televisions or video games. 2. Talk about the similarities and differences between the two boys using Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems theory. Make sure to compare and contrast using the levels that are described in this theory.

Explanation / Answer

Bronfenbrenner ecological system discusses the development of the child in particular situations and scenarios prevalent in the environment in which he is living. The theory is represented in the form of series of concentric rings or circles discussing the environment in the surroundings namely the microsystem ,mesosystem, exosystems ,macrosystems and chronosystems. The microsystem includes the immediate environment of the child in which the child develops. It includes the relationships of the children with their friends, family members which influences their development in the society. The mesosystem of the child includes the interest and the responsibility of the parents to take care of their children in society. It includes the attending of the workshops and conferences by the parents of the children for the benefits of their children. The exosystem includes the external factors affecting the life of the parents and their children. For example if the parents do not have money or are not able to pay rents then this situation affects the upbringing of their children in society. Macrosystems include the benefits provided to the child like governmental opportunities, incentives and cultural values necessary for the benefit of the child. The chronosystem includes the time period of the development of the child in the society.

The case study includes the scenario of a child Jon who is 9 years old and is suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He answers in the class beforehand and gets into various kinds of troubled situations in the school. He has a great great grand father Daniel who lives in a rural setting in the village. The village has lack of the facilities for teaching and upbringing the child in schools.

The environment prevalent for the child living in the village is different from the child living in the city. The opportunities, environment and upbringing are different in the schools located in the villages and in the cities. The ecological system theories discussing the interaction with friends, family members, the types of opportunities are different in the villages and cities. The villages lack the facilities and concentrate on agriculture for producing the vegetables and food items with lack of education and interest in studies whereas the children in cities have to concentrate on studies . This is a necessary criterior for their employment, their interaction with friends and for the security of their life and job in the society.

The statistical analysis was done for the parents of the child living in the village and the city. It was analyzed that the parents of the less educated mother had children with less grades as compared to the grades of the children of more educated mother. The grades decreased further when the child was raised by a stepmother or the real mother alone after a divorce as compared to the upbringing of the children living in the cities under the care of both father and the mother.
