Question
Hypnosis: Myth, Magic or Mystery?
This is an EC Discussion worth 5 points, with no credit for cross-posting but feel free to comment on what other students say -- after all, these are called "discussions"
BTW, the student in my Fall class commented on the Get Out with some student saying that the idea of undergoing hypnosis proved to them so scary they would never try.
Let me assure you, from someone who had an extensive background in that area back in the 80s when UCI Medical Center had a Hypnotherapy and Pain Clinic and I had a working relationship with them for years.
Trust me when I say that Get Out has absolutely nothing to do with the use of hypnosis in a therapeutic context that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
What are some of the basic theories surrounding hypnosis. Does anyone have any experiences they would like to share, either personal or about others?
There is so much I could say on this subject that I try to get a feel for what you folks are interested in discussing, so go for it -- the ball's in your court.
Explanation / Answer
After watching Get Out I too had to take seat back, and marvel for a moment at the use and functions of Hypnosis. Although, I also knew that the the use of the concept of Hypnosis within the given movie had been extrapolated for the sense of cinematic appeal, and wasn't an entirely accurate display of the concept that is hypnosis.
My mother is a trained hypnotherapist and practitioner, and she has always told me that hypnosis is not the way it is depicted in movies and/or fictional book, although the underlying are the same, but there are hyperbole that are used to mystify the concept. She said that hypnosis is based on the fundamental premise of suggestions and influencing though suggestions and suggestive behavior. She also said that hypnosis cannot always function on anyone and everyone as it depends on whether the individual is willing to be suggested, but there is also always a way around it.
She also mentioned that it the art of connecting the individual with self on a much deeper level. Of course, this is an oversimplification while she was telling me all of this in order to make me understand all that surrounds around this mystifying concept.
She has has several therapeutic instances of hypnosis wherein she has had success, one such recent case was that of a teenage girl who had developed partial social anxiety, and she was in need of reinstating control over herself and her environment.
