question that needs to be answered ----->The ghost of William James shows up the next evening. He wants to talk to you about his perspective. You tell him that you analyzed the experience of eating dinner the night before from the structuralist point of view. He asks you to do the same only from his perspective. How would you do this? How would the two perspectives differ?
Explanation / Answer
Structuralism is one of the most important earlier schools of psychology and it laid the foundations for others schools to come. Structuralism aimed at objectively identifying the structure and elements which make up the human mind. Structuralist believed in analyzing the mind by studying the inner experiences and feelings. One of the criticisms of this theory is that Structuralism was subjective in nature as it relied heavily on introspection, which is the process of observing ones own feelings, thoughts and emotions. In response to this criticism and limitation of this theory, functionalism school of psychology emerged.
Functionalism placed more emphasis on studying and explaining the conscious experience and behaviors of individuals in a systematic way. Functionalism also looked on how individuals behaviors are effected by difference in the environments which they are exposed to.This theory also places much emphasis on ones purposes in life and how individual minds are adapted to different environments. Criticism of functionalism was that it focussed on the objective aspects of the mind and ignored the subjective aspects which structuralism had focussed on. Structuralism concentrated on the composition of the human mind whereas functionalism concentrated on the adaptions of mind to various environments.
