Question

Bell and Quinn (2004) stated: Attempting to define the challenging behaviors displayed in early childhood classroom settings runs the risk of overwhelming or insulting the reader. A professional who is new to the field may despair at the thought of implementing an early childhood curriculum and creating a classroom environment that addresses severe challenging behavior. A seasoned professional may quickly reply, Tve tried it all. Let me tell you my story." Regardless of experience, early childhood teachers often feel inadequate, frustrated, and desperate when confronted with these serious and frequent classrooms disruptions. When faced with a child who poses significant behavior challenges in the classroom, the teacher's first task is to step back and clarify the elements of the problem situation (p.1). For this discussion post, describe a time when you have observed a child displaying challenging behavior. This can be from your own personal experience or by spending a few hours in a child care setting and observe a child displaying challenging behavior. Be sure that your description is detailed. Various behaviors occur for any number of reasons; however, in your opinion, describe the elements of the problem situation? In other words, what were some of the factors contributing or causing the behavior to occur? This discussion post will be graded. You are encouraged to examine the grading rubric prior to completing the discussion.

Explanation / Answer

I had encountered a child, a girl of 4 years old, while i was interning in a child care facility. The child in the beginning appeared to be quite shy, but that demeanor only lasted for precisely a day, after which there was a tectonic shift in her conduct as well as behavior. She had an extremely calculated behavior for her young age.

By calculated behavior I mean, she was far more shrewd as compared to the rest of her comrades and she knew exactly what the adults were talking about if there was such a case that involved their conduct. One such example was: The kids were asked to complete there work and clean up after their toy mess in order to obtain a chocolate as a result at the completion of the designated tasks, while the rest of teh children were convinced without any adieu, this solitary child walked up to me, and said, " I will only clean up after you give me the chocolate, i know you won't give me the chocolate later, after cleaning."

She also harbored a quick wit, and always into fell trouble, more so on purpose or as a stunt despite knowing it was well avoidable. She would create a ruckus everyday by inhibiting other childrens play, and when an adult would approach to stop her, she would be quick to cry and blaming the other child on a whole for her acts, which would put other people in a spot. And, it would take a long time to simmer her down.

It was discovered that, she had been behaving in this manner as a displacement for a tragic loss she had suffered, which had created a temporary shift in her conduct as she was too young a child to process the concept of death, that too of her father with whom she was really close to. She had lost him in an unfortunate and sudden car accident. And the sudden absence of a loving figure created a void, and she did not know how to circumvent the loss due to her young age. This made her slightly volatile and pull of stunts that would satiate the lack of affection and fill the void that had been created by the sudden demise of her father.
