Explanation / Answer

1. Managed care includes those activities that are intended to reduce the cost associated with provision of health care on one hand and aiming to improve the quality of health care on the other hand.

Pros of managed care: Firstly managed care helps in reducing unnecessary health care costs. Different mechanisms and tools are used to reduce the unnecessary costs. For example managed care provides economic incentives to physicians as well as the patients to go for less expensive forms of care. Secondly there is an availability of strong network of health care providers. The health care providers have gone through an accreditation process and hence are capable for providing quality care.

Cons of managed care: Firstly managed care has the disadvantage of rigidity of rules with regards to the choice of health care providers. Secondly there is usually long waiting periods to get appointments and many network providers have their offices and clinics located at inconvenient locations.

2. In my opinion managed care is definitely a positive to the field of health care. Without managed care it would have been very difficult to optimize the balance of cost and quality aspects i.e. it would have been difficult to lower costs and ensure higher quality of care both at the same time. Different managed care providers like HMOs, PPOs, and POS ensure that health care costs are down and that quality is not sacrificed.
