Question
Need to show numbers in the formulas and not in Excel.
Two different models of cars were tested for gas mileage. Test the claim that the models have the same gas mileage at the .05 level. Assume the variances to be unequal. State the hypotheses and identify the claim, find the critical value(s), compute the test value, and make the decision, summarize the results.
Car A Car B
n1=9 n2=13
x1=28.6 x2=32.1
s1=4.1 s2=2.1
Explanation / Answer
Null Hypothesis : m1=m2 ( m1 and m2 are mileages)
Alternate Hypothesis: m1 not= m2
Critical Value :
z = ( x1 -x2 -0) / sqrt((s1^2/n1) + (s2^2/n2))
= ( 28.6 - 32.1 -0) / sqrt(((4.1)^2/9) + ((2.1)^2/13))
= -2.36
Since it is a two tailed test,
P- value = 0.0091 + 0.0091
= 0.0182
P < 0.05
Conclusion : Failed to reject null hypothesis
