Question
Bsed on the results below, how would you describe the relationship between heart attack patients being treated with aspirin and whether or not they lived?
Male Heart Attack patients treated with aspirin Male Heart attack patients not treated
males who lived 15 4
males who did not live 2 8
X(2)=8.34, df=1,p<0.01
Explanation / Answer
Let us set hypotheses as follows:
H0: There is association between heart attack and treatment with aspirins
Ha: There is no association
THis is a two tailed chi square test
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
For chi square test we calculated the expected values based on null hypothesis.
Then we prepare a contingency table and calculate chi square.
?2 = 9.385, df = 1, ?2/df = 9.39 , P(?2 > 9.385) = 0.0022
Critical value for chi square =8.34 (given)
Alpha = 0.01
Our observed chi square is 9.385 >8.34
p value = 0.0022<0.01
Hence reject null hypothesis.
There is association between aspirin treatment and living.
