Question
A researcher is interested in measuring the correlation between two mental health variables, depression and anxiety. This correlation tells us
Whether depression causes anxiety or vice versa
How likely an individual is to be diagnosed with depression if he has anxiety
Whether depression and anxiety are related
The strength and direction of a straight line relation between depression and anxiety
Whether depression causes anxiety or vice versa
How likely an individual is to be diagnosed with depression if he has anxiety
Whether depression and anxiety are related
The strength and direction of a straight line relation between depression and anxiety
Explanation / Answer
When the correlation is found between the depression and anxiety, it will tell how these two are related, which means that whether with the increase in one will lead to the increase or decrease in other,
For is the increase in depression cause an equalt amount of increase in anxiety then we say that they are perfect positively correlated. and if the amount of increase is not same then we say the are positively correlated.
In that case the straight line will have a positive slope
But if the increase in depression cause an equalt amount of decrease in anxiety then we say that they are perfect negatively correlated. and if the amount of decrease is not same then we say the are negatively correlated..
In that case the straight line will have a negative slope.
