ID: 3430828 • Letter: D
Question
Determine whether an individual's political affiliation affects his or her overall satisfaction with the economy. For this assignment, use only subjects that declared themselves as Republicans or Democrats and leave out any subjects who declared themselves as Independents or Undecided. Analyze any potential differences by conducting the appropriate type oft-test.
Be sure to use the proper df and show all the steps of calculations, including the test statistic.
Include an explanation of how the critical value was determined. Explain why you chose that particulart-test.

Explanation / Answer
We use independet t test becuase it tests two different groups.
Let mu1 be the mean for R
Let mu2 be the mean for D
The test hypothesis is
Ho: mu1=mu2(i.e. null hypothesis)
Ha: mu1 not equal to mu2 (i.e. alternative hypothesis)
The test statistic is
t=(xbar1-xbar2)/sqrt(s1^2/n1+s2^2/n2)
=(8.33-7)/sqrt(1.15^2/3+1.73^2/3)
= 1.11
The degree of freedom =n1+n2-2=3+3-2=4
Assume that the significant level a=0.05
It is a two-tailed test.
The critical values are t(0.025, df=4)=-2.78 or 2.78 (from student t table)
The rejection regions are if t<-2.78 or t>2.78, we reject Ho.
Since t=1.11 is between -2.78 and 2.78, we do not reject Ho.
So we can not conclude that an individual's political affiliation affects his or her overall satisfaction with the economy
