Chapter 6 – Hiring for Values and Talent- Mayo Clinic

Look over the questions below and choose one question, from each category, that you believe would be important to ask in an interview at your facility. You may want to have a particular type of facility in mind to help you choose the questions.

Once you have chosen the questions:

                  a) Type out the Category title (don’t just type Category 1)

                  b) Type out the entire question (not just the number of the question)

                  c) Your response must include the following:

Explain what would be the “best” answer you could hear

Discuss answers that might concern you (i.e., what are you looking for them to say? What might they say that would cause you to question whether to hire them?)

Provide a short summary as to why this question is important in an interview

DO NOT tell me how YOU would answer the question – you are not the one being interviewed. What do you want to hear from an applicant?

Interview Questions

Category 13: Teamwork (Encouraging and Building) Getting Groups/Individuals to Cooperate

Category 14: Team/Team Member Strengths –

1. Tell me about a time you recognized a team member for having made a valuable contribution to the team.

Explanation / Answer

13.

This particular question is relevant to the context because it reflects teamwork. Teamwork is essential as it is the teams, not the individuals, who will be instrumental in bringing change and competitive advantage for the clinic. Moreover, when the team members are physically distant from each other, it is very difficult to maintain a clearcut communication flow. The role of the leader becomes crucial in that case. The interviewee is expected to cite an example of his/ her leadership in team communication. A good response will constitute the ability of the interviewee to use tools (e.g. IT infrastructure) and competence (e.g. communication planning). The interviewee is expected to cite his/ her innovative styles of communication management which he/ she has applied earlier in the work tenure. The answer must be based on one (or more) real incident(s) and NOT based on hypothetical situations.

14.

This question is designed to simulate the perception and knowledge of the interviewee regarding his/ her team members' potential. For the success of our clinic, it is essential that a leader must know the strengths of his/ her team members at their minutest detail so that he/ she can best allocate the resources as per the requirement. The interviewee is expected to answer in detail. We are NOT looking for superficial knowledge of the interviewee regarding the strengths of his/ her team members. He/ she will be asked (poked) to cite details about these strengths and should be able to satisfy even the minutest queries of the interviewers. Moreover, the strengths cited should not only cover the technical competence of the team members but also their soft skills, traits, personalities, and potential. Furthermore, the interviewee should also be able to cite relevant examples to demonstrate the strength of the team as an entity.
