Question
On June 1, all employees received an email from the Accounting Department inform- ing them that the fiscal year was almost over and there were unexpended funds. You were asked to submit to your supervisor a list of items you wanted to purchase. The email from the Accounting Department indicated that all budget requests must be submitted by June 20. On June 2, you sent your list to your supervisor, who responded in an abrupt and curt tone of voice. He said he was busy with more impor- tant tasks and would get around to it later. Today is June 16. You really would like to have the items on your list. • How do you handle the problem?
Explanation / Answer
If this is the situation then I would send another email to the manager reminding him that the email from the accounting department said that the last date to sublist the lost of items to be purchased is June 20th. I will request him to take some time out of his busy schedule and complete this work as soon as possible so that I will have that list in my name for the accounting purpose. I will wait for his reply for the next two days and if I get a similar kind of abrupt reply or even no reply from him then I will send another email saying that the task needs to be done within two days and if it is not done then the accounting team will not consider that list anymore. But this time I will keep the director who manages my manager in the copy of my email. I am sure that this will solve my issue as the manager has to answer his manager for giving abrupt answers when something important was requested. The manager cannot get mad because he was informed of this task two times with a clear update from the accounting team. The role of a manager is to take care of the needs of the team members. So he will have to complete this task or then answer the questions from his manager.
