Explanation / Answer

1. Ethics

Walmart is constantly blamed for killing local businesses in an area. Whenever Walmart arrives at an area, their operational model offers lower prices than most of the mom and pop stores can afford. As a result, the traditional local businesses die. This may seem unethical but this is how a capitalistic economy works.

In addition to these, there have been reports in the media about Walmart’s unethical practice when it comes to treating their employees. For example, in June 2017 there has been a report on NYTimes that Walmart has been punishing employees who took sick leave. Apart from that there have been several report of discrimination and underpaying employees of certain diversity.

When it comes to social responsibility, Walmart does participate in socially responsible activities. It has been focusing on creating local opportunities, sustainable growth and sourcing, community building, and other charity events.

Overall I think Walmart makes sound ethical decisions. There have been some complaints about unethical practices but we need to understand that when a company is as large as Walmart, there are bound to be a few dissatisfied employees. For most part, Walmart has done well for the community, consumers, and overall economy.

2. Global aspects

Yes, Walmart operates in global marketplace. They have presence and operation in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico and United Kingdom.

The main business impact that impacts Walmart globally is their operation. The company is predominantly into retail business. As a result, they need strong supply chain management system and sourcing and procurement management in place. This often causes challenges in countries where availability of logistics, technology and infrastructure is underdeveloped. In addition to this, there are also local laws and regulations that needs to be taken into consideration by Walmart.
