Question
In a fantasy football league there is a north and south division that both have five players. At the end of the season the two players with the best divisonal record will be selected to fill a four person playoff bracket. The contestants for this years playoff are Player 1: Andrew, Player 2: Dustin, Player 3: Jack, Player 4: Brandon. You want the players Andrew and Jack, who are from your division, to have the best chance to win. If the order of the bracket (who plays who) hasent been slected yet, which format gives a player from your division (Andrew or Jack) the best chance to win.
1) Andrew vs. Dustin , Jack vs. Brandon
2) Andrew vs. Jack , Dustin vs. Brandon
Explanation / Answer
for 1) Andrew vs. Dustin , Jack vs. Brandon, P [ Andrew wins the title ] = ( 1/2)*( 1/2) = 1/4..
P [ jack wins the title ] =1/4 as well!... ( assuming chance of winning and losing = 1/2 for each match)
so,P [ any winner from my division ] = ( 1/2) [ 1/4 + 1/4 ] = 1/4.....
for 2)Andrew vs. Jack , Dustin vs. Brandon
P [ winner from my division ] = 1 * ( 1/2) = 1/2..
1/2 > 1/4..
so, 2) Andrew vs. Jack , Dustin vs. Brandon is the best option according to probability!
