Question

How would you respond to the following?

A Z-test is a type of hypothesis test. Hypothesis testing is just a way for you to think out if results from a test are accurate. For example, if a doctor said he or she had found a new drug that cures AIDS, you would want to be sure it was probably right. A hypothesis test will tell you if it is probably right, or possibly not correct. A Z test is used when your data is nearly normally distributed.

Both samples are simple random samples, the samples must be independent, each population is at least 20 times larger than its respective sample, and the sampling distribution of the difference between means is roughly normally distributed.

Explanation / Answer

If the underlying data is normally distributed then a sample size greater than 20 is not needed for the test to be performed. But if the underlying distribution is not normal, then a sample size greater thana 20 is need for the sample statistic to be approximately normallly distributed and for Z test to be performed.
