Question

BOOMERS GEN ? MILLENNIAL GEN 2020 Born 1946-1964 Born 1965-1976 Born 1977-1997 After 1997 3) Please read the following brief descriptions of two studies a. A recent study evaluated a large sample of Canadians of all ages. All data were collected in the spring of 2018. Among "Baby Boomers" (54-72 years old) who had completed university, only 6% of the them wrote with their left hand. Among first year university students from the same sample, a (lucky) 13% of the them wrote with their left hand. The authors conclude from this data that being left handed is associated with a reduced likelihood of completing university b. A large American study tracked individuals from the years 1974-2014, capturing samples of people born in the 1960s all the way to the 1990s as participants. In this data, the authors found that: "Among those aged 20-24, more than twice as many Millennials born in the 1990s ( 15 %) had no sexual partners since age 18 compared to GenX' ers born in the 1960s (6 %)"(Tw another way, when participants were 20-24 year old, 15% of millennials has no sexual partners since age 18, whereas only 6% of people belonging to Gen-X (born in the 1960s) has zero sexual partners between ages 18-24. The authors conclude from this data that between ages 18-24, millennials were twice as likely to be sexually inactive compared to those in Gen-X. Wells 2016). Put Which study has a valid conclusion based on the data and study design, and what feature(s) of the study make the conclusion valid?

Explanation / Answer

Answer

Both studies are similar in that both are observational and not experimental studies.

However, in terms of the data available, they do differ and hence the conclusions drawn there-from are also quite different.

The conclusions drawn from the second study (comparing the sexual behavior of millennials and GenXers) are more tenable than those from the first associating left-handedness with University education.

In the first study, the data collected is confined to left-handed people, lacking any data of those who are not left-handed. For the conclusion to be reliable, a full-fledged (2 x2) contingency table involving left-handed and right-handed people and their University education status needs to be generated and tested for association and if found associated the exact nature of relationship can be established through a regression study.
