Question
It is commonly believed that age is related to Internet usage among college students. Here are data from a sample of six college students:
Age (x)
Internet usage hours/week (y)
18
20
18
19
19
17
20
16
20
15
21
8
The goal is to perform the bivariate regression of age on Internet usage hours per week. Ultimately you’ll have to compute the values for B0 + B1 in this equation: Internet = B0 + B1Age + . What is the value of B1?

Explanation / Answer
The least square regression equation is ,
y = a + b * x
where , y = dependent variable
x = independent variable.
a = intercept
b = slope
In excel we can calculate a and b by using following commands,
For intercept(a) = INTERCEPT(KNOWNY_Y,KNOWN_X)
For slope ( b ) = SLOPE(KNOWNY_Y,KNOWN_X)
We get a = 78.23 and b = -3.23
We get the least square regression equation as
y = 78.23 - 3.23 * x
we get the value of B1 = -3.23 ............( Answer )
