Question
1. Birth weights of babies born in the US are normally distributed with a mean of 3389 grams and a standarod deviation of 575 grams. A newborn is considered to be of low birth weight if the baby weighs less than 2500 grams. (a) What is the probability that a US birth is of low birth weight? (b) Birth weights in Sedan are normally distributed with a mean of 2836 grams and a standard deviation of 650 grams. Find the probability that a Sudanese birth is of low birth weight. deviation is of low birth weight.Explanation / Answer
a) Mean is 3389 and s is 575
z is given as (x-mean)/s
P(x<2500)=P(z<(2500-3389)/575)=P(z<-1.55) or 1-P(z<1.55), from normal distribution table we get 1-0.9394=0.0606
b)Mean is 2836 and s is 650
P(x<2500)=P(z<(2500-2836)/650)=P(z<-0.52) or 1-P(z<0.52)
from normal table we get 1-0.6985=0.3015
