Question

1. Suppose you hear a report that says the chances of developing lung cancer increase by 10 times, just by living in the city versus the country. How do you interpret this?

2. You are interested in whether there is a relationship between gender (M/F) and driving a truck (Y/N). You take a random sample of 200 vehicles and their owners. Of the 79 males sampled, 48 drive trucks and 31 do not. Of the 121 females sampled, 56 drive trucks and 65 do not. and calculate a chi-square test statistic of 4.01. Using the critical value chart given below, what is your statistical conclusion?

Degrees of Freedom

Chi-Square Critical Values for a = .05

1

3.84

2

5.99

3

7.81

4

9.49

You better move to the country; 10 times is a huge difference.

Explanation / Answer

1 )  You need to find out what the baseline risk is and what confounding variables were adjusted for before you can determine how serious this is for you.

2 ) Value of the chi square test statistic = 4.01

Chi square critical value = 3.84

Now , 4.01 > 3.84

Hence we reject the null hypothesis or H0 .

There is a statistically significant relationship between gender and driving a truck ; men are more likely to drive a truck than women.
