Question

33. Professor H is in charge of a program to prepare senior college students for the General Requirements Exam (GRE). Her records show that 75 % of the students need help with the quantitative section of the exam, 83 % of the students need help with the analogies section of the exam, and 65% need help in both sections. a. Find the probability that a student needs help with the quantitative and analogies. (show the work and define the rule/exception to the rule) Calculate the probability that a student selected at random needs quantitative or analogies help. (show the work and define the rule/exception to the rule) b.

Explanation / Answer

Let A be the event that proportion of students need help with the quantitative section of the exam.

B be the event that proportion of students need help with the analogies.

Given that,

P(A) = 75% = 0.75

P(B) = 83% = 0.83

P(A and B) = 65% = 0.65

                By using addition rule,

P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B)

                 = 0.75 + 0.83 - 0.65

                 = 0.93
