Question

Problem 1 (20 points). The following numbers are relevant for Math 3030: 2 (number of exams so far), 4 (number of hw assignments so far), 20 (number of lectures so far 17 plus the 3 upcoming lectures), 3 (number of course sections: algebra, calculus, statistics), 3 (total number of exams), 3 (number of times 3 is previously mentioned in this problem) 7 (total number of hw sets) a. (5 points) Compute the sample mean. b. (5 points) Compute the sample standard deviation. c. (5 points) Compute the sample median. d. (5 points) Compute the sample range Problem 2. (10 points problem 2 from page 1024) In rolling 2 fair dice, what is the probability of a sum greater than 3 but not exceeding 61?

Explanation / Answer

As per the Chegg policy, we are advised to do one question at a time so i am attempting the 2nd one.

2. P(Sum greater than 3 but not exceeding 6)

= P(Sum is 4 or 5)

In rolling of two dice, we have:

Total number of outcomes = 6*6 = 36

Ways of getting sum as 4 = 3 [(3, 1), (1, 3), (2 ,2)]

Ways of getting sum as 5 = 4 [(3, 2), (2, 3), (4, 1), (1, 4)]

Hence,

P(Sum is 4 or 5) = (3 + 4)/36 = 7/36

Therefore,

Required probability = 7/36
