Question

This is from a Random Processes class in Electrical Engineering dealing with probability.

1 (a) Jack and Jill are each dealt 7 cards from a standard 52 card deck. i. What is the probability that Jack has exactly 2 aces? ii. What is the probability that Jack has 2 aces and Jill has the other 2 aces? (b) King Arthur has 7 (identical) bronze swords, 3 (identical) silver swords, and 2 (identical) gold swords. How many different ways can he distribute these 12 swords to his 12 knights so that each knight has one sword? I want a number, not a formula.

Explanation / Answer

a) P( 2 aces) = n( 2 Aces and 5 other cards) / n. of ways of picking 7 cards = 4C2 * 48C5 / 52C7 = 4*3 /2 * 48! / ( 43!*5!) * 7! * 45! / [52!]= 0.0767

b)P( Jack has two aces) = 0.0767

P( Jill has remaing two aces) = 2C2 *  43C5 / 45C7 = 43! *38!*7!/[ 38! *5! * 45!] = 0.02012

b) No. of ways to distribute swords = 12! / [7!*3!*2!]= 7920
