Explanation / Answer

Solution :

3.3.17: The arrival delay times (in minutes) of randomly selected airplane flights from one airport to another.

Negative values correspond to flights that arrived before the scheduled time and posiive values represent the length of delays. The data is : -3 , 4 , -23 , -1 , -6 , -25 , -35 .

(i) Range: Maximum delay = 4 and Maximum length before time = -35

Thus, Range = 4 - (-35) = 39 minutes...........(Ans)

(ii) Variance: The variance of the above data is = 218.2381 ~ 218.2 (one decimal)..............(Ans)

(iii) Standard deviation: The standard deviation of the above data is = 14.77288 ~ 14.8 (one decimal).....(Ans)

Even though any data set contains any negative values, the standard deviation and the variance of the data set can never be negative. They are always non-negative.

3.3.21: The two data sets are given on the BMI of 1920s and 1930s and BMI of recent winners.

Coeff of variation (CV) = ( Standard deviation / Mean ) * 100 %

Coeff of variation for BMI (1920s and 1930s) = 7.188609 ~ 7.2%...........(Ans)

Coeff of variation for BMI (recent winners) = 6.294401 ~ 6.3 %...........(Ans)

Thus, the CV of the BMI (recent winners) is less than BMI (1920s and 1930s).

Thus, the variation of BMI (recent winners) is less than that of BMI (1920s and 1930s).
