No population need not be normal for sample mean to have approximately Normal distribution in case of large sample size (genereally greater than 30).
When the population is Normally distributed then sample mean x- is definately normal. However for a sample mean to be approximately normal populaton may non-Normal as well. The reason lies in the large sample theory. It says that if sample size is sufficiently large then for the given population mean and variance the sample variance is approximately Normal with mean eqal to population mean and variance equal to population variation divided by sample size.
