What about as differences? Will the internet ever replace catalog shopping? Answer the following questions:Compare and contrast mail order catalogs and Internet shopping. What do you see as similarities? What about as differences? Will the internet ever replace catalog shopping?Explanation / Answer
As the name suggests, mail order catalogues involve catalogues sent to the consumers having relevant details that are used to select and order the product, whereas internet shopping requires the consumers to visit the web portal or app to buy the products. Internet shopping is the case of pull marketing, but mail order catalogue is the case of push marketing. Mail order catalogue can be operated in online as well as offline environment, but internet shopping can take place in the online environment only.
The similarities are as follows:
A. In both these methods of buying, consumers take decisions only after reviewing the visual images of the products on offer and characteristics.
B. Both of these methods can also be conducted in an online environment.
C. Both of these methods require a logistics network to deliver the product to the consumers.
D. Product return guarantees are very important in both these methods.
The differences are as follows:
A. Internet shopping is not specific to the company, but mail order catalogue is company specific.
B. Internet shopping strictly requires internet, but mail order catalogue can be done offline also using mail services.
C. Mail order catalogue requires investment is catalogues, but it is not the case for internet shopping.
Internet shopping has reduced the scope or market share of catalogue based shopping due to its higher level of efficiency, savings due to no requirement of catalogues and broader alternatives to the consumers. But, mail order catalogue will remain to be popular in few products where catalogues are important and products are of high value. A catalogue better represents the product in these cases. So, mail order catalogue will remain to be popular in limited extent in some high value products.
