Question

6 Sec. 2.4 A person traveling from Seattle to Sydney has three airlines to choose from. 40% of travelers choose airline A, and this airline arrives late to Sydney 10% of the time, 35% choose airline B, and this airline arrives late 15% of the time, 25% choose airline C, and this airline is late 8% of the time. (a) What is the probability that a randomly selected person flying from Seattle to Sydney is late? (b) If a randomly selected traveler is late, what is the probability that they flew using airline A?

Explanation / Answer

P(Airline A) = 0.40

P(Airline A & Late) = 0.40 X 0.10 = 0.04

P(Airline B) = 0.35

P(Airline B & Late) = 0.35 X 0.15 = 0.0525

P(Airline C) = 0.25

P(Airline C & Late) = 0.25 X 0.08 = 0.02

(a) P(Late) = 0.04 + 0.0525 + 0.02 = 0.1125

(b) P(Airline A/Late) = P(Airline A & Late)/P(Late) = 0.04/0.1125 = 0.3556
