Question
2) A researcher wanted to study the coffee drinking habits of women ages 25 to 40. She took a sample of 6 women and asked them how many ounces of coffee they had that day. She got the following responses: 12, 8, 14, 12, 0, 20
A)What is the population she is working with? (1 point)
B)What is the sample mean, median and mode for number of ounces of coffee? (4 points)
C)What is the sample variance and sample standard deviation for the data? (4 points)
3.2) Describe the difference between a normal distribution with a mean of 17 and a standard deviation of 3 and a normal distribution with a mean of 17 and a standard deviation of 12.
Explanation / Answer
a)
population is all women in age group of 25 to 40
b)
mean = sum of all observations/total number of observations
(12 + 8 + 14 + 12 + 0 + 20)/6
= 66/6
= 11
Data in sorted manner: 0, 8, 12, 12, 14, 20
Median = average of (n/2)th and (n/2 + 1)th observation
= average of 3rd and 4th observation
=(12+12)/2
=12
Mode = number occurring maximum number of times
Here 12 is the mode
c)
sample variance = sum(Xi-xbar)^2/(n-1) = 222/5 = 44.4
sample sd = sqrt(variance) = sqrt(44.4) = 6.663332
Xi (Xi-Xbar)^2 12 1 8 9 14 9 12 1 0 121 20 81 sum 66 222 sum/n 11 sum/(n-1) 44.4Related Questions
