Question

5. Answer the questions about the following timer instructions. a.) Fill in appropriate values for each of the blanks below to setup a timer with a timing interval of 35 seconds. TIMER ON DELAY Timer Time base Preset Accumulated EN DN b.) Fill in appropriate values for each of the blanks below to setup a timer with a timing interval of 12 seconds. TON TIMER ON DELAY Timer EN Preset Accumulated DN c.) Which of the timers above (part'a' or part 'b') would likely be found in a ControlLogix program?

Explanation / Answer

a) TON instruction is used to turn an output on or off after the timer has been on for a preset time interval. following are the perameters to be programed in TON.

Timer: It is used to address a timer counter. it has following format. T4:x. Here T stands for a timer file, 4 is default file number and x is timer no (0 to 255).

Time base : is the time interval used for increment of accumulation. ACC will increase by 1 after delay of time base. this is preset between two values, 1.0 second or 0.01 second for counting.

Preset : Accumulated will count upto this value.

Accumulated : is initial value if ACC.

following are the valid parameters for TON to generate delay of 35sec.

Timer --> T4:2

TIme Base --> 1

Preset --> 35 (35x1sec is delay time)

Accumulated --> 0 (start counting from 0)

or following values can also be used.

Tmer --> T4:1

Time base --> 0.01

Preset --> 3500 (3500x0.01 is delay time)

Accumulated --> 0

b) An alternate data type to for TOn instruction. it used in ControlLogix. following is the description of its parameters.

Timer : To use TON instruction we need to create a tag for that timer. Use of same tag on multile timers cause interface. this tag will have a perset, accumulated value, EN (Enable) bit, DN (Done) bit, and a TT (Timer Timing) bit. e.g.-"exampleTimer".

Preset : Accumulated will count upto this value. This valued shows time interval in milliseconds(ms).

Accumulated: this value increment from initial value to preset value.

parameter to generate delay of 12sec (12000ms) are:

Timer : exampleTimer

Preset : 12000 (12 sec)

Accumulated : 0

c) Timer in part b is used in ControlLogix.
